No Hose, No Runoff, Nothing in the Water

Rethinking the way we clean our boats.

When it comes to cleaning boats, we think there is a question that doesn't get asked enough: what happens to the product after you've used it?

Most boat cleaning products are designed around the same principle. They clean the boat, and whatever is left behind eventually ends up in the marina, harbour or sea. The argument is often that what goes down the drain is safe, biodegradable or environmentally friendly.

At Sea Clean, we decided to take a different approach.

Nothing goes in the water

Our waterless cleaning system means you can clean your boat without a hose, bucket or running water. Instead, the product is applied directly to the surface and removed with a microfibre cloth.

The result is simple: less water used, less contaminated water produced and nothing deliberately washed off your boat and into the marina.

It's not just about what goes in the water

We believe sustainability shouldn't mean compromising on how well a product works.

There are plenty of products on the market that are marketed as sustainable, but if they don't clean properly, protect the surface or leave the finish you want, you're unlikely to keep using them.

That's not how we wanted to approach Sea Clean. We wanted to develop products that perform as well as any high-quality marine cleaner, while making better choices wherever we can. That's why our range is designed around both performance and responsibility.

Most of our products are biodegradable, with the exception of WW Waterless Wash, WW Pro and GP Glass Perfection. These three products use a silicone-based formulation. Silicone-based ingredients are widely used in everyday products such as skincare, moisturisers and sun creams, where their properties help provide protection and a lasting finish.

A balanced approach

The silicone technology used in these products helps protect surfaces, improve the finish and make future cleaning easier. We don't believe in removing an ingredient simply because it sounds less sustainable if doing so means creating a product that doesn't perform properly.

Our aim is simple: make products that work exceptionally well, while reducing their impact wherever we can.

Waterless cleaning makes a difference

Using less water might sound obvious, but in a marina environment it can make a real difference.

Traditional boat washing can involve large amounts of fresh water, along with the runoff that comes from washing dirt, salt and cleaning products from the boat.

With Sea Clean, there is no need to stand there with a hose running. Our products can be used on the dock, in the marina, at home or even out on the water. You use what you need, clean the surface and remove the dirt with a microfibre.

It's quicker, uses less water and means you're not simply pushing everything you've just cleaned off your boat and into the water.

What about plastic?

Water pollution isn't the only problem we're trying to tackle. Plastic waste is something we care about too.

Our bottles are made using as much recycled plastic as possible, giving existing plastic another use rather than relying solely on new plastic.

We don't want to stop there

We're committed to removing more plastic from the ocean than the amount of plastic we sell in our bottles. It's a target we're serious about, and one we want to keep increasing as Sea Clean grows.

Because selling a product in a recycled bottle doesn't solve the plastic problem on its own. We want to actively contribute to cleaning it up too.

Less plastic through refills

We're also working with chandlers to introduce 5L concentrate refill drums.

The idea is simple: instead of every customer buying another 500ml bottle, businesses can refill their existing bottles from a larger concentrate. It means a lower cost per litre, less packaging and less plastic being used for every clean.

For us, these are the kinds of changes that make sense. They don't require you to sacrifice performance, and they can make a genuine difference as the range grows.

It's more than just the products

Sea Clean isn't a huge corporation with a sustainability department. We're a small business, and Sea Clean is something we have built alongside our normal working lives.

That means when we're not working on products, customers, dealers or boats, we're often out doing the things we care about ourselves. We take part in local beach cleans because we believe looking after the marine environment shouldn't just be something you put on a bottle.

A different way to clean your boat

We're not going to tell you that choosing an eco-friendly product suddenly fixes every environmental problem in the marine industry. It doesn't.

But we do believe that small changes, made consistently, can make a difference.

• Use less water.
• Reduce runoff.
• Use recycled plastic.
• Refill where possible.
• Help clean up the beaches where we can.

And, most importantly, think about what happens after you've finished cleaning.

That's why our approach is different. Other products can tell you that what goes into the water is safe. We'd rather make sure nothing goes in there in the first place.
